During the early 1930s, Bruno Mathsson studied the “mechanics of sitting”, among other things by sitting in a snowdrift and then studying the imprint his body made in the snow. In 1933, this work had led to a series of chairs, the Model 36 work-, rest- and lounge chair, which he was able to show to the public at his debut exhibition in 1936. The work chair was continuously developed further, was fitted with armrests and took its final form in 1941 when a variant with a high back and head cushion was also launched. That chair was in turn further developed and in 1948 took its final form with the upper part of the back being angled slightly forward. It is sold today under the name Eva high back.
